Originally, the Poppy Field Co-op was just named "P.O.P.P.Y", which stood for "Profit, Over People, Planet and Youth." This was an ironic gesture made by Tate Donohoe (our founder) in reference to the order in which most of the world prioritises parts of our society today. Wanting to make the cause more appealing, Tate moved to a more accessible branding scheme, whilst still holding the primary idea, a critique on modern society. Tate felt that the idea of an unbreakable community, symbolised by the individual poppies coming together to form a field, was perfectly poetic and relevant to the cause; thus, the Poppy Field Co-op was born.
The Poppy Field Co-op is more than a business. Before forming the Poppy Fields, Tate was a massive advocate for environmental, social, economic and political revolution. Channelling this passion, (and not wanting to get arrested for more erratic means of change) Tate decided to go down the path of organised revolution, through supportive, sustainable and positive change-making. The Poppy Field Co-op is dedicated to designing, creating and maintaining an eco-friendly, fully sustainable, supportive and innovative community estate. Core aspects of the project include: affordable residential and tourist accommodation, collaborative and innovative office spaces for partner organisations, and a fully fledged permaculture system to support local and surrounding communities.
Supporting the needs of the many, rather than just the elite, is a core principal in the Poppy Fields. By bringing experts, communities and organisations together, we hope to drive significant change, right here on the Sunshine Coast. Promoting the sustainable production of clothing, food, entertainment, transport and connection, the Poppy Field Co-op strives to create a ground-breaking positive impact on our local region, and the world.
The Poppy Field estate will facilitate environmental conservation, sustainable production of food and clothing, positive activism initiatives and most importantly, foster an unbreakable sense of community. Ultimately, we're here to bring groups of people together., so we'll be offering sustainably built & powered accommodation and office-spaces to local and national partnered not-for-profit organisations to nurture connection, innovation and action.
We want to be the best. Not in a competitive way, but in a self reflecting and ever-growing way. On the Poppy Field Co-op we're constantly looking for ways to excel in the work we do, by learning and reflecting. We hold ourselves to a high standard, because that's what the people, planet and our future generations deserve. To do this, we're always looking at how we can make our operations more sustainable, efficient and effective. Are resources being wasted on a redundant area? We cut down. Did someone take the easy way out, and we notice how much better we could be doing for people or planet? We fix it.
None of that "maximising profit, minimising losses" BS. We're here to make a change, not a quick buck.
No matter if you're a prospective donor, volunteer or event attendee, you deserve transparency. That's why both our short-term and long-term plans are ALWAYS available for you to view and critique. After all, we've got nothing to hide, in fact, we want the whole world to see what we're doing. Have a look for yourself ↓
